Scoot's Liberty to Olathe Walk - Live Progress: Last Updated 04/15/2007 21:35
UPDATE: Detailed route map now online.

On Sunday, April 15, 2007 I will embark on a walk between two of Kansas City's furthest-flung suburbs, bisecting the metro area. When all is said and done I should end up walking between 32 and 38 miles. I'm doing this for no particular reason except as a personal challenge to myself. My previous longest walk was about 29 miles.

On the day of the walk this site will show my progress as it happens thanks to some nifty little technical tricks. Photos I take along the way will appear here as I take them, I'll post periodic comments about things I see or how I'm feeling, and I'll even be able to respond to comments or questions you post here during my walk.

I'll be setting out around sunrise on Sunday morning. Drop by this site anytime Sunday to see how I'm doing!

LIVE NOTES FROM THE WALK

Final stats
The mileposts on this site were rough estimates and didn't take into account side trips for food and drink as well as a couple of course corrections I made after missing turns. With these details added in, here are the final stats for the walk.
Miles walked: 37.5
Calories burned: 4,700
Steps taken: 69,800

I'll post the full final route map in the nexxt day or two.

COMPLETION!

MILE 36 - 21:35

I DID IT! I did want to get all the way to the courthouse but it's just too late. PetSmart is good enough! Thank you everyone for all your support today! Full details in my blog tomorrow.

MILE 35 - 21:11

OLATHE!!!! Since it's getting late I'll probably stop in 1 more mile.

MILE 34 - 20:53

Almost there! In case the map didn't update I'm on College, heading west from Pflumm.

MILE 33 - 20:34

i have had a few repeats on my ipod but I'm more happy for the 20 hour battery. Barbara, did you send the old lady on a cellphone ehat blew thru her red light while I was in the crosswalk?

MILE 32 - 20:08

i diverted this way because I've walked the short way before. I went to the Bait Shop yesterday so no temptation there. As for media attention, Star 102 contacted me and we played email tag but never connected.

MILE 31 - 19:48

MILE 30 - 19:29

i just opted for a more interesting but 1 mile longer route.

MILE 29 - 18:56

Just took a dinner break. John, sunset is irrelevant -- I'm in familiar territory so as long as it doesn't freeze I'm fine in the dark. Chris - So far they are holding up well. Parents - If you come looking for me wait until after I pass I-35 then look for me on Santa Fe or Pflumm. Please bring water with you! :)

MILE 28 - 18:10

MILE 27 - 17:37

I just realized I've been going nonstop since the City Market so I'm stopping to take a break for a little while.

MILE 26 - 17:14

MILE 25 - 16:52

found water at PV Shops. BTW photos are going to start being sparse to conserve battery power.

MILE 24 - 16:34

MILE 23 - 16:26

Oops... Forgot to post this mile, passed it a few minutes ago. Almost out of water again... Hope something is open in Prairie Village Shops

MILE 22 - 15:59

MILE 21 - 15:31

i'm about to go up what should be the last big hill.

MILE 20 - 15:08

i got watered up at Sunfresh... I can see the Plaza now. Once I get up the big hill south of Brush Creek it should be a cakewalk.

MILE 19 - 14:48

Gonna have to find a place to refill my water soon.

MILE 18 - 14:29

MILE 17 - 14:03

MILE 16 - 13:41

Just ran into a jogging Seth at 14th&Main. :) Jill I hope to end at the courthouse but 114th & Strang Line is the minimum goal.

MILE 15 - 11:37

Gonna take a lunch break now so this will be the last update for a little while.

BTW as for the question about the bridge, there's no sidewalk but the shoulder on the east side is about 8 feet wide.

MILE 14 - 11:14

MILE 13 - 10:57

MILE 12 - 10:39

starting to feel the burn... Luckily I have a break coming up soon.

MILE 11 - 10:18

took a break at Cerner to upload a bunch of photos from Avondale.

MILE 10 - 09:50

About to enter Avondale, one of the most secluded little towns engulfed by Kansas City.

MILE 9 - 09:32

Still doing great.... Starting to work up quite an appetite.

MILE 8 - 09:12

MILE 7 - 08:58

MILE 6 - 08:41

if this past mile seemed awful fast, it's because I forgot to punch in the previous mile. :)

MILE 5 - 08:31

MILE 4 - 08:05

I'm in Claycomo now, walking by the Ford plant.

MILE 3 - 07:45

I'm about to do the trickiest highway crossing of the entire route.

MILE 2 - 07:12

Hooray! The sun's finally high enough to start doing some good.

MILE 1 - 06:52

START - DOWNTOWN LIBERTY
04/15/2007 06:38

Kind of a chilly start to what should be a nice day, so I'm wearing a jacket. The sun is just starting to show here at Liberty Square.

Scott -
I just read about the 14 mile walk from the River Market to the Plaza and back in this morning's (Sat.) Star. Unfortunately it is now 11:30 am and I have missed the walk. Please let me know about any other urban walks or urban walking clubs (want to start one?). Thanks,
ted jursek
