The 40 Mile Challenge

On Sunday, July 1, 2007 I tried 40 miles in a single day for the first time.

I started at William Jewell University in Libery, MO and begin walking southwest, intending reach the Johnson County Courthouse in Olathe, KS. This would have been a distance of just over 40 miles. After injuring my left foot near Oak Park Mall, I aborted the walk at Johnson County Community College.

LIVE NOTES FROM THE WALK
Remember, this walk is being done to benefit a charity. Please, make a donation if you can!

MILE 34.5 - 21:47

CALLING IT OFF... William Jewell to JCCC. Sorry I couldn't do it, I blew a big blister on my left foot a mile back and each step is agony. My ride is nearly here.

MILE 33.5 - 21:31

Crossed 435

MILE 33 - 21:23

Doesn't look like I'm gonna pull this off, folks. :( Gonna shoot for at least crossing 435.

taking a break

MILE 32.5 - 20:49

See below

MILE 32.3 - 20:42

OK, here's the deal. I know I'm so close, but I am really feeling right now like I don't think I can do this. I caught a second wind after dinner but the earlier fatigue really took a lot out of me. I still have more than 2-1/2 hours to go at my current pace and I just don't see how I can do it. I can accept that the 37.5 miles I did 2 months ago may just be my natural limit. What do you all think I should do?

MILE 32 - 20:26

At Oak Park Mall. Just went through the infamous 95th Nieman crosswalk that lights both WALK and DON'T WALK at the same time

MILE 31.5 - 20:14

MILE 31 - 20:05

MILE 30.5 - 19:59

MILE 30 - 19:49

3/4 of the way!

MILE 29.5 - 19:37

MILE 29 - 19:30

Nope.. Arbys. I got a ride here, so according to my rules I have to ride back to where I was picked up.

MILE 28.6 - 18:42

DINNER BREAK - forgot to post this earlier. Should be back on the road in 30-40 minutes.

MILE 28.5 - 18:29

MILE 28 - 18:15

MILE 27.5 - 18:00

Whew, that last half mile was plagued with construction and too forever. As for mean dogs, a few moments ago I was savagely attacked by a bichon friese (sp?) :)

MILE 27 - 17:21

Stopping to refill my water.

MILE 26.5 - 17:15

MILE 25.5 - 16:54

back on the move

MILE 25 - 16:21

Taking a break. Pain is only at about 4 but fatigue is at 8. The humidity is really getting to me, if it doesn't cool down soon I don't know if I can do this.

MILE 24.5 - 16:12

MILE 23.5 - 15:56

MILE 23 - 15:53

just watered up at the Fairway Hen House

MILE 22.5 - 15:33

I'm in Kansas now... Trudging up a steeper hill than Kansas should be allowed to have.

MILE 21.5 - 15:13

MILE 21 - 15:00

i think I liked the weather better when it was gloomy.

MILE 20.5 - 14:52

halfway there!

MILE 19.5 - 14:32

MILE 19 - 14:18

Looks like due to excessive mud I have to alter the next half mile... bypassing the steepest hill. TOO BAD.

MILE 18.5 - 13:57

The next mile is the toughest of the entire trip. Other than I guess mile 40. :)

MILE 17.5 - 13:35

MILE 16.5 - 13:12

Maybe "Glasses For Hayhows" should be my next charity.

Nah, John, I've got wily moves. Break over, hitting the road again.

MILE 13.5 - 10:26

1/3 done! Gonna sit and rest my feet a few minutes. Oh and John? The most likely place to be hit by a truck is coming up in about 45 minutes. :)

MILE 12.5 - 10:05

MILE 11.5 - 09:43

I just heard a rooster crowing.

MILE 10.5 - 09:26

Nope Ken just pepper spray. :) In about 4 blocks I'll pass a spot where my reconn work shows an outdoor rottweiler lives. :)

INFO:
07/01/2007 09:16

10 miles... 1/4 of the way to goal! :)

MILE 9.5 - 09:05

MILE 8.5 - 08:47

MILE 7.5 - 08:31

MILE 6.5 - 08:13

MILE 5.5 - 08:00

Thanks to the humidity I'm soaked in sweat. Luckily it's nice and cool.

MILE 4.5 - 07:37

MILE 3.5 - 07:22

MILE 2.5 - 07:05

INFO:
07/01/2007 07:00

Neither I nor my end-of-route ride have to work tomorrow so the only impact from the late start should be dark pictures the last few miles. :)

MILE 1.5 - 06:46

The humidity today is going to be a problem.

MILE 0.5 - 06:33

MILE 0.25 - 06:26

START - WILLIAM JEWELL - LIBERTY, MO

Getting a later start than I planned but I'm now underway!

Life is a journey, not a destination. It 's not where we end up, but what we experience along the way that really matters. Good job son.

Gallant. It was a privilege to follow you on this, a stupendous effort. Well done in doing what you did and stopping when you did.
